Final Music Video

Updated Version of the Magazine Advert

I have got some feedback from Nick and he mentioned that I need to suggest that it is advertising a digipak rather than an album. I have now edited it so it now suggests it is a digipak rather than advertising the album out now. We have also decided, because of the dimensions of the picture we have created, that the image is for a half page advert.

Magazine Advert

Here is our design for our magazine advert, for our artist's DVD. To start of with I thought that using a still shot from our live footage of the artist would work well with the advert. However, my teacher saw our design for our digipak and he thought that that sort of design could work better for our magazine advert. I decided to use the same image for the middle of digipak because it worked perfectly for the advert, as in the middle there is a disc which displays her name and song/album title. This advertises the DVD very boldly and automatically, this was exactly what we were looking for and it still showed the theme of the music and style of the artist.

Below are a few images of us creating the magazine advert and the digipak.

Design for Our Digipak

Here is our design for the digipak that we would use for our artists DVD. The video we produced, tracks and live footage would be included in this DVD. We chose to design the pack in the style of someone's diary or notebook. The design of the inside, and the side that folds in, includes post-it notes, pages from the diary(lyrics included), pictures of the live footage, pictures of her and her boyfriend and notes seemed to be passed in class. This was to give the impression of a romantic diary.
The design of the back and front includes images of the front and the back of the diary. The front show the name of artist and song/album title and the back includes content of DVD and production companies.

In displayed order : Front, Back, Inside Fold In and Inside of digipak

Task 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?

1. a shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals

This image shows a shot from the video 'Don't Let Me Get Me' by Pink. We chosen this shot to present lyrics relating the video because this shot that we found is almost exactly the same as the lyrics spoken at the same time. She says "my socks are never clean" and then she sniffs her socks, implying that they stink.
This was a lot different with our video because we didn't choose to show the lyrics as litterally as that so we chose to show them in her face emotions, if anything at all.

2. a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented

This image above we have chosen because it gives an obvious image of how the artist and the company wanted to represent her. This is a pop singer, female idol and a male interest so this is dramatically displayed within the video by the costumes she chooses to wear.
However, with our artist, she is also a solo singer but because of her genre, which is soft acoutic, she is represented as almost a soft rock chick.
3. a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre

This image above displays the genre of the video, which in this case is heavy rock. It is shown by the huge crowd in the background, head banging with the band.
With our video is was quite easy to display which genre we were trying to get across. This was because we had her playing an acoustic guitar for a live performance and this straight away gives the genre of the music.

4. a shot that shows an intertextual reference

This shot shows an inter-textual reference. This reference specifically relates with our video because we decided to use a shot just like this, of our artist singing to herself. We got our idea from this video and the hourglass images.

5. a shot that demonstrates your use of camera

This image shows use of the camera and we chose this shot specifically because the camera is showing the artist's hand holding notes on the guitar. We also chose to use a shot similar to this, it works really well and we found that a lot of videos use this.

6. a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting

This shot we have chosen to show use of lighting. The lights shine from behind her and light up the band within the room, it is also a good way to show up the graffiti on the walls. We used bright lights like these, however, they had a blue tint to them and we found that having them rotating made our footage a lot more interesting.

7. a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene

This image, we think, shows mise-en-scene quite well. This is because the it displays the majority of his costume, his prop and the scenery behind him. With our video, we paid a lot of attention to start of with, when it came to the artists costume and how we wanted her to be portrayed in the video.
We wanted her to wear her casual clothes but not be glamed up or wear a lot of merchandised clothes. In the end, she wore plain jeans, black and white shoes, a black top with little writing and a white jacket. As we had pretty much the same back ground for the majority of the video, we didn't feel the need to pay as much attention to it. However, we did make sure we had the lighting that we wanted and the right props.

8/9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos

Task 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?

1. a shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals
This shot shows a link between the lyrics of the song and the video because the lyrics to the song are quite sad and very emotional and this shot so the pain she is feeling about what the song is describing and the link between the lyrics and her emotion.
2. a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented
This shot shows how a record company would want the artist to be represented, because she is a live performance artist and this shot shows her on stage with microphone, in a live performance.
3. a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre
This shot show the type of music genre that the music video is, this indicates that the music video is for an acoustic song, as it is a close-up of the artist playing an acoustic guitar.
4. a shot that shows an intertextual reference
This shot is an intertextual reference to a shot from the music video KT Tunstall - Black Horse And The Cherry Tree (number 4 in the shots from other music videos shots)
This shot is a reference in the way that the shot from KT Tunstall and this shot are of a mirrored image of the artists face/mouth singing.
5. a shot that demonstrates your use of camera
This shot shows the use of camera by showing one of the many different shot angles that we experimented and used in our footage for the music video. We used a lot of angles and this is a close-up of Becky playing the guitar from above.
6. a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting
This shows the use of lighting that we used in the music video because the lighting in our video was blue and white stage lighting, the lighting used in our video was the same type of lighting that would be used in a live performance, because it is a live performance video.
7. a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene
This is a shot that show some of the mise-en-scene in our video, this shows that the video is on a stage with lighting (live performance).
8/9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos
These shots show that we have watched other music videos to get references/influences from when making our music video, these are similar shots that me and Philippa found in other music videos and that influenced our final video. (Number 8 and 9 from other music video shots)

Task 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

This is the script for the voiceover of our video that we will record.

(Bold - Alie)
(Italic - Philippa)

"Hi I'm Alie
, Hi I'm Philippa

Becky Young is a solo acoustic artist and she mostly performs live. We used these aspects about her, in the video. We tried to put this across in the music video by having it as a performance based video and it being just her and her guitar.
We also tried to portray her as she is in real life, a regular teenage girl, dressed in regular clothes, just trying to make it as a solo artist.

We also used aspects of her music and song style in the ideas for our digi-pack and advert idea. As most of the songs that she writes are based upon her; feelings, thoughts and her life. We made the digi-pack and advert in the theme of a diary because a diary is usually where people display their feelings, thoughts and life. Also a notebook/diary seems the kind of places that a teenage singer would note down any lyrics or themes for songs. As the majority of her music is based upon her love life and her boyfriend we tried to portray the diary themed digi-pack and advert as if it was her diary; with pictures of her and her boyfriend. This is also helping to get across the way we tried to represent her in the music video, a normal teenage girl.

The original idea for the advert was to have a shot from the music video, of her on stage, but through comments and feedback it seemed a better idea to have the advert and digi-pack images either similar or excatly the same.

The reason behind having the images on the both the digi-pack and advert the same was because the advert was advertising the digi-pack and this would show that the two are connected and related to one another.

Overall we feel that through the proccess of making the music video, digi-pack and advert that we have definatly achieved the way we wanted all of these to be portrayed."

Task 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Here is a version of our music video which includes a voiceover describing and talking about our digipak and magazine advert. It also includes images of our digipak and magazine advert.

Task 3 - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

During our project, myself and Alie have been posting feedback on the blog, which we have received from various people. We started off by posting feedback that received from Nick(our teacher) and Mike(a member of the class) and this was when we had completed our first rough cut. Below is the feedback and the post that put on blogger.

First Rough Cut Feedback - Nick

We have come a long way since we started to edit the footage and we have received a lot of different but useful feedback. After this rough cut we decided to get rid of all of the outside footage and the footage from inside the car.
This then left the live Junction footage, which we have been told is quite strong and will be able to stand by itself. We than started to edit the Junction footage, adding in transitions, small effects to make the footage more visually interesting. We thought that this feedback was quite useful because it will help us to a better quality video in the long run and it meant that we could discover more effects on Final Cut.

Feedback From Mike

We completed our rough cut of our music video. I then asked a few people to look through it and Mike decided to give us some feedback.
The feedback which he gave us was that he thought that our video content was a good idea and that overall it was edited quite well. He also mentioned that once it gets started into the journey, it is works very well. However, he thought that it started off a little to slowly and needs to be cut down a more before the final edit.
I thought that this feedback was useful and we used it to make our video better. As we are getting rid of the journey footage all together, it makes his feedback quite easy to do and we will try to make the footage pick up more speed and move on more smoothly.

Junction Feedback

The feedback which they gave us was very useful, it is similar to what Nick had advised us to do and it will help us to make our video a lot better.
They thought that the outside footage of the video didn't work well with the live footage from the Junction. However, they thought that in some way it could work but to take the time to find out how, would take a long time, which we didn't have. We have decided to get rid of the outside footage completely to make our video. We are keeping the live footage and working with it visually in Final Cut so it will be more interesting and gripping.
The judges at the Junction also thought that when they were watching the video, they could imagine the artist laying in the coffin throughout the song. This was because of what the lyrics were talking about and we thought that this could work but the chances of us getting a coffin is low.

Digipak Feedback

I have got some feedback from Nick and he mentioned that I needed to suggest that our advert is advertising a digipak rather than an album. I have now edited it so it now suggests it is a digipak rather than advertising the album out now. We have also decided, because of the dimensions of the picture we have created, that the image is for a half page advert.

Task 4 - How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Here is an image of the technologies which we have used during our music video project. We have had a task to take a picture of these technologies and annotate it. We also asked to get images of the websites and software which we have used. However, I couldn't work out how to annotate the image within Photo-shop so I decided to write about it after the picture.

Here is an image which I have created in Photoshop and this shows some of the technologies that we used to create our music video. This includes a HD camera, a tripod and an Apple Mac computer. These technologies really helped use when making our video and we couldn't imagine how we would have made it.
However, we had a think about how we would have created our video if we weren't able to get hold of all the technologies that we have this time. We would have to use a DV camera instead of a HD, if we didn't have a tripod we would have to do all of our shots hand-held, if we didn't have the software on the Mac, such as Final Cut and Photoshop, we would have to try and film the footage exactly how we wanted it and pause it in the right place to start again. If we didn't have all of the online sites, such as Blogger and Facebook, we would have to write down all of the evidence that we needed and we would have to get our feedback by showing people our video face to face.
All of these factors were so important when making our video and it made things a lot easier to get done within the time that we had.

Below are some images of the online sites that we have used for displaying evidence, getting feedback, researching and the software which we have used throughout our project.

Email Feedback From Todd from Godfrey Entertainment

We needed feedback from someone else, for our music video. Alie had a good idea to email the chief editor of Godfrey Entertainment and send him the video to give feedback. Below is the email that he sent back to us, which included feedback from him.

"Hi Alie,

Nice job on the music video. Your Dad said you were interested in
feed back... There isn't a right way or a wrong way as I'm sure
you've learned in
your classes as art is subjective.

Were you limited to shooting in studio? Not allowed to mix in random
shots of your artist perhaps walking down a street?

I think you have to consider the type of song and that dictates the
style of the video. You did that. Your cut matched the pace of the
song. Creatively, you could have taken some of your shooting a
little further, for example, shooting close ups of a shoe or even a
shoe lace on the stool, ecu of the frets of the guitar, her eyes,
etc. I think more of that would have been interesting. Textures
(from filters during your edit) could have been also used to add some
depth. Grainy black and white. Perhaps an over exposed or blown
out look(hot). Maybe more rack focusing.

These aren't new ideas. There really aren't too many ways to
innovate as everything has been done and done again. It depends on
whether you're limited by budget, turn around time,
location, or class assignment.

It would be difficult to create for your many different angles, but I
really liked the shadows on her face as the video was fading to
black, about 4:03, where she was more back lit.

Keep up the good work!

Todd"

Feedback From Facebook

We decided to put our video on Facebook to see if we could get some feedback from other people. However this didn't turn out how we wanted as we didn't get any feedback and no one decided to post a comment. Here is a screen grab of our video on Facebook.

Font Research for Magazine Advert

I needed to research fonts for the magazine advert that we have to make and I thought that the best palace to start would be dafonts.com. Here are a few that I thought could be suitable for the advert.
I started by looking at handwritten fonts because this could go with the theme of our digipak as it is made in the style of a diary/notebook. I also then went to look at basic and bold fonts as this could be more suitable for an advert as it is clearer and more noticeable.

Editing Images

Some more images of us editing in Coleridge, just after we got feedback from the Junction and the teachers. At this point we are editing the live footage we took at the Junction, as we have now decided to make the video completely out of that footage and get rid of all the outside and car footage. This was part of the feedback that we received and I think that it will really help to make our video better.

Research - Magazine Adverts

I have researched into magazine adverts and I tired to look for some on the internet and there was very few which came up or were useful to me but I found these. I was mainly looking for the solo artist image in an advert, with maybe a live feel to it but I have also found some artistic ads which give me ideas to fit in with our digipak.
I thought that capturing an image from our video, from the live footage and then blowing it up for our ad would really show what we want and what the video is all about. I think that if we were to go for anything too artistic or an image of her face, it would look more like the genre of the music and this is not what we are going for.
